Le WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING brings together elected officials and technicians from cities and metropolises designated World Design Capital and representatives of the World Design Organization (WDO)®.
For the 2020 edition, Lille Metropole wished to involve its foreign partners as well as several national, European and international cooperation networks which work, through design, for the transformation of our cities and territories.
Betrand DEROME, Director General of the WDO, acts as moderator of this meeting.
WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING 2020 EDITION will bring together 30 representatives of the World Design Capitals, cooperation networks and Institutes. Discover the profiles of the main speakers below.
Bertrand DEROME
MANAGING DIRECTOR
OF THE WORLD DESIGN ORGANIZATION
Bertrand is a not-for-profit organization manager and sustainable design advisor with more than 20 years experience. He is a lecturer who eagerly advocates for design’s social, environmental and economic impacts, for the betterment of the world. After graduating from the School of Design at Université de Montréal, he practiced design in a studio, as well as in a manufacturing company.
He joined the Institute for Product Development as the Sustainable Design Advisor and became the general manager of the Institute in 2012, where he developed private and public partnerships, both locally and internationally, helping organizations improve their innovation practices. He has also served as President of the Quebec Association of Industrial Designers (ADIQ) in Montreal (Canada) and participates as an advisor on many public and sectoral committees and juries.
Damien CASTELAIN
PRESIDENT
OF LILLE METROPOLE
Reelected President of Lille Metropole in July 2020 (previous mandate 2014-2020).
Having initially trained as geographer Damien CASTELAIN is Mayor of the City of Péronne-en-Mélantois since 1998 (one of the 95 cities of Lille Metropole).
He was previously appointed Vice-president for Urban ecology of Lille Metropole from 2008 to 2014.

Srini SRINIVASAN
PRESIDENT
OF THE WORLD DESIGN ORGANIZATION
Presently, Srini is the President of WDO (World Design Organization, formerly Icsid), working with its global members to promote design for a better world.
He is the Chairman & CEO of LUMIUM DESIGN, Inc., a Silicon Valley based, world class, award-winning product Design Company that has developed 300+ products in the Consumer Electronics, Medical, Industrial Goods, Security and Surveillance domains. Lumium has design studios in Santa Clara, (USA), Ahmedabad, Kochi & Mumbai (India) and in Tokyo, Japan to execute creative design projects for global clients.
Srini is an Adjunct Professor of Industrial Design at Tongji College of Design & Innovation, Shanghai and also a member of its International Advisory Board. He is on the Advisory Board of Indus Design School, Indus University; and Wellingkar Institute of Management Development & Research, Mumbai, India. In his role as Advisory Board member, Srini helps and mentors technology start-ups as well as educational institutes.
Dan PLATO
MAYOR OF THE CITY
OF CAPE TOWN
Dan Plato was sworn in as Executive Mayor of Cape Town on 6 November 2018. He previously served the City as Executive Mayor between 2009-2011 and played an integral role preparing the city for the FIFA World Cup 2010.
During his previous time as Executive Mayor, The City of Cape Town won the Auditor-General award for good governance and accountability and was highly rated for its basic services.
Prior to this, Executive Mayor Plato worked in the Emergency Services and held a number of offices, including being Councillor on the Cape Metropolitan Council and the Cape Town Unicity. He was Committee Member for Housing in 2006 and Mayoral Committee Member for Service Delivery and Integration in 2009.
Mayor Plato has also served as the MEC for Community Safety, Western Cape from 2011 to 2018. Chairperson of the Economic Development, Tourism and Property Management Portfolio Committee and the Goodwood-Central Sub-council as well as a Member of the Executive Council of the Cape Metropolitan Council.
Paola Francesca LEON
DEPUTY MAYOR
OF THE CITY OF TORINO
Deputy Mayor for Culture of the City of Torino since 2016.
Expert on cultural management and planning, from 2004 to 2016 she was the Director of the Associazione Torino CiEà Capitale Europea pursuing cultural heritage promoGon and developing several projects among which the museum card system “Abbonamento Musei Torino Piemonte”.
She also worked for the Italian naGonal public broadcasGng company RAI, for the Emilia Romagna Cultural Agency (AICER), Civita, Elemond and Arethusa. She has carried out a number of surveys, consultancy acGviGes and research on the management and promoGon of cultural heritage and she has published several arGcles on major newspapers and journals.
Sergi CAMPILO
VICE-MAYOR OF THE CITY
OF VALENCIA
Doctor cum laude in Biology with a European mention from the Universitat de València, I have worked as a researcher with a thesis on evolutionary ecology at the Cavanilles Institute for Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology (UV) with also a 5-month stay at the University of Hull (United Kingdom).
Activist for sexual, gender and family diversity since 2000, and with a strong green soul.Member of several human rights and environmental entities. I speak 4 languages: Catalan, Spanish, English and French.
In addition, I have also worked as the biological manager of the biobank at the Superior Center for Research in Public Health (CSISP, Regional Government of Valencia) and as head of biological analysis in a technology-based microenterprise (Metis Biomaterials) through the Inncorpora program of the Spanish government to facilitate the incorporation of doctors into the enterprise world.
EIn politics, I have worked as an advisory staff in the local group of Compromís (a valencian leftish and green valencian coalition) in the València City Council during the period 2011-2015. From 2015 to 2019 I have been 4th Deputy Mayor and Councillor for the Interior Government and Devesa-Albufera of the Valencia City Council. Finally, in the local elections of May 2019, I was again reelected councillor and now I have the responsibility for urban ecology and Deputy Mayor in the local government.
Hanna HARRIS

CHIEF DESIGN OFFICIER
Licentiate of Social Sciences and Urban Researcher Hanna Harris has been chosen for the position of chief design officer at the City of Helsinki.
She is specialised in making architecture and design visible, and making use of the opportunities they present in society.
Previously, Hanna has worked as programme director for Helsinki Design Week and the Finnish Institute in London. Design and architecture are essential contributors to the international competitiveness of Helsinki. They also have a significant role in the Helsinki City Strategy.

Agnes Ling-Yu HSIAO

Agnes holds a PhD degree in sociology at the University of Cambridge, UK. Her research focuses on transitional justice discourses, politics of memory, politics of emotion, and war.
After back to Taiwan in 2018, Agnes joined Mayor’s Office, working as the advisor to the Mayor and the Deputy Commissioner of the Commission on Youth, assisting in policy formation with the local government and NGOs. Since 2019, she becomes the Deputy Director of Taipei City Brand Team, focusing on the integration of design-oriented and user-oriented logic in policy making and branding projects in Taipei City.
Richelle SCHUSTER
HEAD OF PROGRAMME INNOVATION
AT LEEDS CITY COUNCIL
Richelle has led programmes and teams in local Government and Professional Services. She has designed and delivered regional and national business transformation initiatives across all sectors and life-stages.
Richelle was a principal Researcher in Innovation Strategy - at UMIST/ University of Manchester, Design Programme Manager at the Design Council, Senior Design Policy Manager for the London Development Agency and the Mayor of London.
Before joining Leeds City Council to lead on the innovation agenda and the MIT REAP programme, she was Associate Director at Grant Thornton UK LLP advising a portfolio of businesses on innovation and business growth.
Anna Lisa BONI
SECRETARY GENERAL
OF EUROCITIES
Anna Lisa Boni has been secretary general of EUROCITIES since June 2014. She has 25 years of professional experience in EU public affairs in the field of local and regional government and has successfully worked for a stronger recognition of cities’ challenges within the European agenda.
Her aim is to act in a way that best serves European cities as key players in the European project and centres for generating renewal and growth. Anna Lisa has a Masters degree from the University of Bologna in political science, and from the University of Leuven in European studies.
Geneviève SEVRIN
CITES-UNIES FRANCE
MANAGING DIRECTOR
Geneviève Sevrin has been General Manager of Cités Unies France, the French network of local authorities working on international issues and decentralized cooperation, since September 2017.
Expert in international affairs, she leads a team of 15 people in order to support local authorities to improve their projects and to mutualize their geographical and thematic interventions, for a strengthened efficiency of the cooperation projects.
In narrow link with the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Cités Unies France also accompanies the legislative evolutions that must allow a simplification of the modalities of support to local governments. Member of United Cities and Local Governments, the international network, Cités Unies France leads a task force handling question of crises and urban impacts.
Cités Unies France is also member of the European platform, Platforma, which aims at developing the modes of intervention of the EU regarding decentralized cooperation, for a better access of local governments to the financing.
Engineer by training, Geneviève Sevrin had also chaired Amnesty International France.

Denis TERSEN

ORGANIZING COMMITTEE GENERAL MANAGER
Denis Tersen is General Manager of the Organizing Committee of Lille Métropole 2020, World Design Capital .
He served as Chief of Staff to the French Secretary of State for Digital (2014-15) and Deputy Director of the Cabinet of the French Minister of Foreign Trade (2012-14). Senior advisor to the Court of Auditors, he graduated from the Institute of Political Studies (IEP) in Paris and a former student at the National School of Administration (ENA).
